Understanding leadership – Part 16: Images of humanity according to Edgar Schein
The typology of images of humanity according to Schein (1965) is widely known in the literature. HR developers know it by heart. Schein distinguishes four groups of hypotheses about human nature and their consequences for the organisation and leaders. Depending on how leaders see the company and their staff, they will perform leadership tasks: if staff are expected to be primarily "rational-economic" people, leadership will likely mean creating external incentives—bonuses, premiums, etc.—to generate performance motivation. If staff are assumed to seek confirmation through work and take responsibility themselves, the leader will grant scope for design and rely on intrinsic motivation.
